Casting the Runes and Other Ghost Stories (Oxford World's Classics)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (June, 1999)
Authors: M. R. James and Michael Cox
Average review score:

Chilling Tales for a Winter's Night
As a fan of Victorian gothic fiction, this anthology delivers all that it promises. M.R. James is the king of creating a world of unexplainable situations. However, his endings leave the reader with many questions. Thus, when the reader puts the book down, she is left with the pleasant, tingling feeling of fear. If you like understatement and are a Radcliffe or Monk Lewis fan, then give M.R. James a chance.

Like poetry!
They are like good poems in being very re-readable. When you've lived with these stories for a while, you may find yourself picking the book up just to savor once again James's description of a Queen Anne house, or his splendid pastiche of a Victorian traveler's notes on a Scandinavian country, or his word-painting of a lonely stretch of sand on the English east coast. Quite a few readers of James have found they "have to" attempt imitations! James doesn't hustle the reader off to the horrors. At the same time his stories are not too refined for their own good.

The best ghost stories that I have read
For several years my daughter and I have made a habit of from time to time gathering all the candles we can muster, lighting them, turn off the electrical lights and reading one of the stories in this collection.

What Conan Doyle is to the detective story, James is to the ghost story. These are not horror stories. No gore is to be found, no monsters, no savagery. One can find a subtle horror, a persistent sense that there are things in this world that we have either forgotten or never discovered.

If one has ever engaged in any historical research on the occult (which I have undertaken as an extreme nonbeliever), one will come across several ancient books and manuscripts in the field that were edited by M. R. James. He was not merely the writer of perfect ghost stories; he was an authority in the field of occult beliefs and practices. This concrete grounding accounts for much of the realistic feel to the researches of many of the characters in his stories.

Child Maltreatment

Authors: James A. Monteleone, Armand E. Brodeur, and Monteleone
Average review score:

The bible for child maltreatment cases
Too many child abuse petitions are being filed today based on bad medical information. This book helps distinguish for the prosecution and the defense the signs and symptoms that are abuse related and are not related to abuse. Aside from providing accurate and complete material necessary to cross-examine a witness in a child abuse case, it is a wealth of information on the experts in the field. Essential book for the child abuse defense attorney's library.

Child Maltreatment: 2 Vol Set
I perform Child Protective Services as a social worker the first agency where I was employed had this two volume set available to the staff. The information contained was detailed and inclusive of all aspects of child abuse. It was a wonderful source of medical information that assisted me in determining the child abuse with signs and symptoms. I have been trying to locate this set since 1998 to use at my agency. I am hopeful that it will be published in the future.

Excellent Resource for Professionals
As a Criminal Investigator that works Child Abuse/Sex Abuse, I found this set to be an excellent source of information. Photographs are quality and help to illuminate the text. Covers intentional and accidental injury. I highly recommend this set to medical professionals who work in this field, especially SANE's. Also recommended for Social Services and Law Enforcment.

The Clearing
Published in Paperback by Oneco Publishing (01 June, 1996)
Authors: Jim McBride and James S. McBride
Average review score:

A freshness of language & splendor of vision.
THE CLEARING is an unforgettable story that borders on music. The characters are well drawn, the novel well written. It is about human beings whose emotional responses are more important than their rational ones. It is "Truth" based upon individual experience and imagination.

The Clearing weaves a web of sensual romance .
Mr. McBride's The Clearing weaves a web of sensual romance. His writing is sensitive and clever. Very refreshing style. I'm waiting for the Horsethief Moon to appear! Jim McBride has an usual talent.

Great New American Fiction.
A friend gave me a copy while I was travelling through Montana and told me it was the best thing she had read in years. You were right Martha. This novel reminds me of the early Fitzgerald and Hemingway writings. The characters are real, they live, they breathe and they suffer for their love. I couldn't put it down. McBride has a good deal of talent.

COBOL for the 21st Century, 10th Edition
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (26 September, 2002)

Average review score:

Expensive but the single best COBOL book I've encountered
University-textbook style, with great organization, readable two-color text, comprehensive index, and discussion of COBOL topics (like reference modification) that I have not seen properly addressed in other COBOL books.

Distinction is also made throughout the text between COBOL 74 and COBOL 85, with separate code examples for each.

A must-have for COBOL programmers!
Detailed discussion of every topic, good examples and the self-test is really helpful.

excellent textbook
i am an adjunct professor utilizing this as the textbook for an undergraduate cobol class. it has more then sufficient examples, and the self-test is helpful for the students.

The Complete Serger Handbook
Published in Hardcover by Sterling Publications (June, 1997)
Author: Chris James
Average review score:

This is IT for beginners!
This told me EVERYTHING to begin serging, practically from taking it out of the box. It discusses everything from turning the machine on and off, to threading for different stiches, the differences between stitches, good fabric to use versus good fabric for regular sewing, etc. I cannot recommend this book highly enough for the complete novice.

Great Reference for a Beginner
Having just bought a serger and quickly realizing I had very little idea of what to do with it I went hunting for a book. This one was a great choice.....It is comprehensive, easily read and understood, and has great visuals. I am positive that I will be referencing it constantly as I try and learn to use my new machine.

One thing: In hindsight I wish I had bought the spiral bound version...The soft cover version does not stay open on its own (nor does it lie flat) which means I either have to give up a hand to hold the book or read some and set it down and go back to it again.

Also, I would not recommend this book to an experienced serger. It definitely sticks to the basics (which is still a lot to say to a novice), and I have seen more creative and comprehensive books for the more advanced. This book is definitely for the person who has never serged before!!

And if you are a novice, this will be a wonderful resource!! (regardless of which brand or type of serger you have)

The Complete Serger Handbook - Chris James
On a recommendation from a friend, I checked this book out and decided to purchase it. It is informative, easy to follow and easy to understand. I highly recommend it to anyone that just purchased a serger or has owned one for sometime and it's setting in a closet in its original box!

Crawling Chaos: Selected Works 1920-1935
Published in Paperback by Subterranean Co (January, 1995)
Authors: Howard Philips Lovecraft and James Havoc
Average review score:

First and last book I shall ever get rid of...
This I am serious. This is just about the first Lovecraft book I ever got. If I were to go broke or die I will certainly not get rid of this one. In this book are all of Lovecrafts finest works. Though I must say to read them at first you will not understand quite fully, especially if for the first time reading Lovecraft. I recommend reading: The Loved Dead, The Hound, The Rats in the Walls and, Nyarlathotep.

A must for Lovecraft collectors
An excellent compilations of many of the short stories that did not make it into many of the mass market anthologies of recent years. Though yes, it also has a few of the old standbys like the Call of Cthulhu and At The Mountains of Madness. The small font and two-column layout means that there is a good deal more material in this book than the page count might tend to imply.

The best work of a great horror writer
This is the definitive collection of Lovecraft; if you've never read his work, but want to check him out, this is the place to start.

A Must For All Mystery Fans
I would like to write areview of a book called The Case of the Missing Hamster. I like to read all kinds of mystery books. This is a book from the series Jigsaw Jones. I liked it because it talked about ways to figure out things. For one, a girl uses her senses because she was allergic to animal fur. I recommend the book to mystery fans. The series includes The Case of The Runaway Dog, The Case of the Secret Valentine, The Case of The Missing Hamster, The Case of The Christmas Snowman, The Case of the Spooky Sleepover, The case of the Stolen Baseball Cards, The case of the Mummy Mystery, and coming soon, The case of the Great Sled Race. Go to your local library and check out one of these books!

One of the best books ever!
I think this book is one of the best books in the world. It's probably my favorite of the first three Jigsaw Jones books. I like Jigsaw Jones because he's funny. He's the best detective in second grade. I'm going to be in second grade, too and it's fun reading about kids my age. I think other kids my age would like these books!

The Case of Hermie the Missing Hamster
I would like to commend the author on this book. My 8 yr. old son loves this one. It especially hit home for him because he has big ears. He gets teased all the time and so he feel in love with the character " Wingnut " . Thank you for helping my son feel special. I would love to see the character " Wingnut " used in more of these Jigsaw Jones books.

The Dark Child

Authors: Camara Laye, James Kirkup, and Ernest Jones
Average review score:

Read African Child and Radience Of The King together
Fascinating. A young foreigner in Paris, a young foreigner in Camara Laye's African Kingdom. It doesen't get any better. Read these 20 years ago.

George Pope

beautiful
A beautifully textured, fluid and organic autobiography, Camara Laye offers readers a piece of his life in The Dark Child. As part of the Malinke community in Upper Guinea, Laye captures the layered tradition and culture of his community, deemed, perhaps by most, to be simplistic or primitive compared to today's modern standards. Yet it is exactly from Layes descriptions of the traditions of his community that we can begin to understand the psychology of the author. Each chapter is rich with imagery, and his words smack of sincerity and innocence, bringing about an effortless quality and flow to his work--it is as if we are there with Laye experiencing his many transitions, from boyhood to manhood. His descriptions of the communal lifestyle of his people is remarkable. Laye's works like other modern African authors reveal the realities of colonization, and help readers to appreciate and celebrate indigenous African traditions.

It took me a long time to read this book.
I first got this book in junior high by a family friend but never bothered to read it until I entered high school. Not having anything to read, I took it upon myself to read the book. I found myself intrigued by the author's way of life during colonialism and his upbringing in a village and his graduation from high school. It was sad that one of his classmates died unexpectedly. Wanting to find out some more about this author I looked up a book of African authors. Unfortuately he passed away in 1980. He is a great writer and wished that I had read it soon as it was given to me.
